Marian Louise Poly Mathews, age 91, resident of Route # 99, Cambridge Springs, PA died Monday, March 24, 2008 at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA after a period of failing health. Born on September 13, 1916 in Mt. Hope, (Guys Mills) PA, she was a daughter of the late Rex L. Poly and Mary Schenberg Poly. On February 26, 1952 she married Stanley N. Mathews and he preceded her in death on October 14, 1994.
Mathews, Marian Louise PolyDuring World War II, Marian was employed at Talon, Inc. in Meadville where she was a chain machine operator. After her marriage in 1952, she joined her husband working on their local dairy farm outside of Cambridge Springs for over 25 years. The farm had been in the Mathews family for over 170 years. Marian was a founding member of Mt. Hope Golf Course which was originally the Poly farm. She was a long-time member of the Cambridge Springs First United Methodist Church and enjoyed golf and bowling. She was well appreciated by her family as an excellent cook and baker.
In addition to her parents and her husband of 56 years, she was preceded in death by three sisters – Ila Smith; Luella Holcomb; and Louise Poly; three brothers – Ernest Poly; William Poly; and Joseph Poly. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Wednesday from 7-9 and are invited to attend funeral services there on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Stephanie Gottschalk, pastor of Cambridge Springs First United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Drakes Mills. Memorials may be made to Cambridge Springs First United Methodist Church, 326 South Main Street; St. Hippolyte Church, 25997 Hwy # 27, Guys Mills, PA 16327; or the charity of one’s choice.
