James F. Cerby, Sr., age 92, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Golden Living Center in Cambridge Springs, PA where he had resided for the past four years. Previously he had made his home with his daughter, Julie Cerby, at 25032 State Hwy # 99, Cambridge Springs, PA for eleven years. Born in Armstrong County, PA on November 11, 1915, he was a son of the late George Washington Cerby and Della Mae Cobbett Cerby. His marriage of 37 years was to the former Eileen Sarah Allen who died November 11, 1993.
A veteran of World war II, he served his country in the US Marine Corp. He made their motto, Semper fidelis, meaning always faithful, words that he chose to live by. James was a welder by trade and was employed by Telepost Company in Linesville for over 15 years retiring in 1977. In younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Known as a committed father and devoted husband, he enjoyed animals and especially his dog “Snuffy”. He was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving family members are twins whom he adopted in 1964 – Julie Cerby with whom he made his home in Drakes Mills, PA and James Cerby, Jr and his wife, Cindy of Fort Myers, FL. He was preceded in death by five sisters – Elmo, Alberta, Harriett, Virginia, and Mary.
Private burial services will take place in Mitchell Cemetery. No other visitatation or funeral services are planned. Memorials may be made to Asera Care Hospice, 1600 Peninsula Drive, Suite 14, Erie, PA 16505. The Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs is in charge of arrangements.
