William Kirk, age 91, formerly of Cheswick, PA, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Manchester Presbyterian Lodge in Erie where he resided for the past three years. Born in Kelty, Scotland on November 5, 1916, he was a son of the late John Grahame Kirk and Christina Neil Kirk. He married Virginia Mae Luyten on August 23, 1941 and she survives.
Mr. Kirk lived most of his life in Cheswick, PA and moved to Erie with his wife almost three years ago to be near to his son in Edinboro. A US Army veteran of World War II, he participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and also served in the Ardennes in France. He retired after 38 years of employment as head of maintenance for Union Switch and Signal, Swissvale, PA, where he also was a welder. He enjoyed watching movies and television, especially game shows such as “Jeopardy”. A former soccer player and golfer, he also enjoyed other sports, was a fan of the Steelers, and for many years enjoyed coaching Little League baseball. He was a member of the Cheswick Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Charles Kirk, who died in 1965.
Survivors in his family include his wife, Virginia Mae Kirk; his son, Jim Kirk and his wife Debbie of Edinboro; three grandchildren, Jonathan Kirk of Edinboro, Regena Kirk of Onancock, VA, and Jamie Petitt of Atlanta, GA; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn Kirk and Alexandria Petitt; and a daughter-in-law, Eileen Chelgren of Huntington Beach, CA.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 306 Erie Street, Edinboro on Tuesday from 2-4pm and from 6:00pm until the time of the funeral service at 8:00pm. Interment will be in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Allegheny County. Memorials may be made to the Cheswick Presbyterian Church, Rt. 28, Cheswick, PA 15024.
