Joseph “Wayne” Phillips, age 67, died at his home, 20249 Main Street, State Hwy # 86, Woodcockboro, Saegertown, PA on Thursday, October 2, 2008 following several months of illness. Born in Teepleville, Rockdale Twp., Crawford County, PA on March 10, 1941, Wayne was a son of the late Roland J. Phillips and Violet B. Grossman Phillips. He married the former Harriet Rose on September 6, 1960 and she survives.
Wayne attended the Townville schools and then became a carpenter. He served his apprenticeship with Carpenters Union Local # 81 and worked with the union for 43 years. His wife and he attended several area churches including – McLane Church of Edinboro; First Church of God, Meadville; Cornerstone Church of God, Meadville, and Lyona Church of Guys Mills. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by a great grandchild – Conor McGrath. He is survived by his wife, Harriet, of 48 years and by a daughter – Charla Jo Ross and her husband, David of Woodcockboro; two sons – Joseph Wayne Phillips, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Edinboro and Bradley Phillips of Edinboro; five grandchildren – Stacy Green and her husband, Dan; Stephanie Ross; Tyson Phillips; Lindsay Phillips; and Jennifer Phillips. Also surviving are four brothers – Warren R. Phillips and his wife, Tammy of Meadville; Edgar L. Phillips and his wife, Gail of Winterhaven, FL; Charles L. Phillips and his wife, Jean of Cochranton; Harley Phillips of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 and from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. Reverend William Cox, executive pastor of McLane Church, Edinboro and Joseph Kaufer, chaplain of Southern Care Hospice will officiate. Interment will be in Gravel Run Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Southern Care Hospice, 16039 Conneaut Lake Road, Meadville, PA 16335.
