Shirley Almira Lucas, age 79, died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Homestead Hearth Personal Care Home, Centerville, PA after an extended illness. She had lived most of her life in the Townville, Lincolnville, and Little Cooley areas. Born in Pittsburgh on June 23, 1929, she was a daughter of the late George Beers. Her mother died while giving her birth. She married Herbert E. Lucas on August 12, 1947 and he died on October 6, 1992. They lived in Rootville until 1970 when they purchased Bertram’s Restaurant located on Routes # 77 and #408. Living at the restaurant, they operated it until 1980 when they sold it to their daughter. After 1980 they operated the Swap Shop located at the old Jervis Church located on Route # 77 and had as their residence 30300 Johnson Road, Townville. Shirley considered herself to be a home maker although in addition to her other employment sold Avon products in Athens Township.
Shirley was an active member of the Little Cooley United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, a Youth Director, and a member of the United Methodist Women. She also was quite involved with Active Aging in Meadville and particularly had an interest there with the Moms Against Drunk Driving and the Coalition Against Smoking.
Surviving family members include three daughters – Chris Richardson and her husband, Gary of New Ringold, PA; Honey Gawlinski and her husband, Gene of Cambridge Springs; and Cheryl Wensel of Meadville; a son – Herbert Lucas, Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Townville; seven grandchildren – Gary Richardson, Sherry Oswald, Terry Richardson, Pete Gawlinski, Jason Gawlinski, Herb Lucas, III, and Alyssa Beer; nine great grandchildren – Oliver Richardson, Megan Oswald, Keri Oswald, Lucas Gawlinski, Logan Gawlinski, Kersten Nageotte, Dylan Lucas, Morgan Beer, and Jake Beer. Preceding in death was a grandson – Kerry Richardson.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral services will be held at the Little Cooley United Methodist Church on Saturday morning at 11:00. Reverend Larry Corner pastor of the Church will officiate. Interment will be in Rootville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Little Cooley United Methodist Church 32732 Teepleville Road, Centerville, PA 16404.
