Bernice S. Mitchell Rodgers, age 81, of 12981 Union Road, Waterford, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, December 23, 2008. Born in Greenwood, Delaware on August 5, 1927, she was a daughter of the late John and Emma Mitchell.
Retiring after many years of employment at Troyer Farms in Waterford, she also previously worked at Elgin Electronics. Bernice loved to read, watch soap operas and game shows on television, and shop at garage sales. Her family, whom she loved very much, has many fond memories of Bernice, including her homemade hamburg gravy and oatmeal cookies.
Preceding her in death were her husband, James E. Rodgers, Sr. who died in 1990; two brothers, Preston and Lester Mitchell; and two sisters, Elizabeth Coverdale and Doris Wynes.
Survivors in the family include five children: JoAnn Porfillio and her husband Tony of Leesburg, FL, Peggy Rodgers, James E. Rodgers and his wife Debbie, and Jerry Rodgers, all of Waterford, and Steve Rodgers of Edinboro; a brother, John Mitchell Jr., and two sisters, Hazel Zimmerman and Gladys Austin, all of Delaware; also, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford on Saturday from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at which time the funeral service will be held. Burial will be private at Waterford Cemetery.
