Henry John Finck, age 94, resident of 23437 Thomas Road, Cambridge Springs since 1954, died Friday, January 16, 2009 at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville, PA after a short illness. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 29, 1914, he was a son of the late Henry William Finck and Maria McLaughlin Finck. In 1935 he married the former Lorraine Mathilda Hayes and she preceded him in death on March 21, 1992.
Mr. Finck was reared in Pittsburgh and attended Catholic schools there. As a young man in his teens he became a scrap metal dealer and tire merchant. During World War II he was stationed as a merchant marine on Staten Island, NY. After the war he returned to Pittsburgh where he began a wholesale tire outlet and a tire recapping business. Mr. Finck relocated to Cambridge Springs in 1952 and founded Finck Tires. Several years prior to his retirement in 1979, he sold the wholesale tire business, Finck Tires, to Leo Olszewski and several years after his retirement he sold the tire recapping business, Cambridge Tire, to Ernie Davis and John Turner. He enjoyed spending winters in Plantation Key, FL until this present season, and hunting and fishing.
Family members surviving include a son, Henry J. Finck, Jr. and his wife, Kelly of Cambridge Springs and their three children – Hanna, Abby, and Nick; a sister – Bernice Carr of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Finck was preceded in death in addition to his wife of 57 years by a brother – Edward G. Finck.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00. Committal services and entombment will take place at Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh on Monday morning at 11:00 am.
