Loren L. “Pete” Mitchell, resident of 22715 Mitchell Road, Saegertown, PA, age 95, died Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown, PA. He had been in failing health for some time. Born in Cambridge Township, Crawford County, PA, on July 2, 1913, he was a son of the late Burnett S. Mitchell and Dora A. Peifer Mitchell. On September 10, 1934 he married the former Maxine Beige and she passed away on March 8, 2000. He subsequently married Gerri Deeter and she survives.
Pete, as his many friends called him, graduated from Cambridge Springs High School and then became a dairy farmer which he pursued for most of his life. He and his son, Lonnie became partners in a milk hauling business which he also did for over 40 years. The business is presently known as Mitchell Trucking. In 2002 he was named to the Crawford County Agriculture Hall of Fame. Pete was a faithful member of the Woodcock United Methodist Church and was quick to witness to his personal faith. In years past, Pete was very active with the 4-H Club program, the Woodcock Grange, and was a former Woodcock Twp. Supervisor. He enjoyed playing golf at the Venango Valley Golf Course where he was a member.
Pete was known throughout the area as a man who was interested in the well being of his many friends. He enjoyed conversing with them and would help anyone in need. He could often be seen at various church dinners and farm related activities.
Surviving family members include a daughter – Peggy Brown of Myerstown, PA; a sister – Louise Gardner of Meadville; his former wife – Gerri Mitchell of Cambridge Springs; six grandchildren – Shelly Stine and her husband, Jeff ; Jason Brown and his wife, Karen; Geoffrey Brown and his wife, Sherry; Gregory Mitchell and his wife, Joy; Maria Beitner and her husband, John Wray; and Mike Mitchell and his wife, Michele. In addition, his daughter-in-law – Monica Mitchell of Saegertown and a faithful care keeper – Florence Kibbee of Cambridge Springs. He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his son, Lonnie Mitchell, who he has sadly missed and his two brothers – Kenneth Mitchell and Clinton Mitchell.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral services will be held there on Wednesday morning at 11:00 with Reverend Audrey Lovewell pastor of the Woodcock United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Gravel Run Cemetery.
