Thora “Sally” Shearer Dunn, age 87, resident of 201 Center Street, Cambridge Springs, PA died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Edinboro Manor, Edinboro, PA following a short illness. Born in Cambridge Springs, PA on July 28, 1923, Thora was a daughter of the late Fred Shearer and Freda Whitford Shearer. On June 12, 1940 she married James L. Dunn and he preceded her in death on July 18, 1994.
Thora worked in the cafeteria and was a cashier at Cambridge Springs Elementary School for 16 years retiring in 1984. As an active member of the Cambridge Springs Presbyterian Church, Thora served as a Deacon and sang in the Church choir. She was a past member and Past Noble grand of Rebecca Lodge #295 in Cambridge Springs. Thora enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking, cooking and traveling. She also enjoyed golfing and dancing.
Preceding Thora in death in addition to her parents was her husband of 54 years, James, who died in 1994 and a great grandson – Franklin Steele. Family surviving Thora include four daughters – Nancy Shorts of Saegertown; Shirley Rose and her husband, Donald of Waterford; Beverly Kibbee and her husband, Robert of Edinboro; and Kathy Ireland and her husband, Joseph of Lewisburg, PA; a sister – Jeannette Shearer and her husband, Eugene of Cambridge Springs; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandson.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Jerry Whitmore, pastor of the Cambridge Springs Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Mitchell Cemetery, Cambridge Township. Memorials may be given to the Cambridge Springs Volunteer Fire Dept., 302 Venango Ave., Cambridge Springs, PA 16403.
