Gertrude F. Van Dyke, age 98 of Waterford, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Greene Township. She was born in Greene Township on November 22, 1911, the daughter of the late Edward and Minnie Haft Schwab. She married Ralph Van Dyke on April 5, 1933, and he preceded her in death on January 19, 2005.
Gertrude was a homemaker who was a devoted wife for over 71 years and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a hard worker who many years ago worked seasonal jobs for local farmers, worked for the Klaus family at the Picnicana picnic grounds, and worked in the cafeteria at Summit Central School. She was a member of the Summit Senior Citizens, and she enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo, cooking, canning, and quilting.
She is survived by four daughters, Helen B. Vogt and her husband Milton of Tucson, AZ, Alice M. Smith and her husband Robert of Waterford, Ann C. Scott of Tidioute, and Martha J. Nero and her husband Anthony of Waterford; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren; also, her brother Richard Schwab of Corry and her sister-in-law Leona Schwab of Phillipsville.
In addition to her husband, Ralph Van Dyke, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Charles, Raymond, Edward, Robert, and Lloyd Schwab; and six sisters: Bertha Schwab, Irene Allen, Dorothy Hartner, Evelyn Griffin, Lois Phillips, and Lavina Kaminski.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford, PA on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm and may attend the funeral service there on Wednesday at 10:30am. Pastor John Yungwirth of West Greene Community Church and Pastor Betty Hollabaugh of Mill Village United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Waterford Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Mill Village U.M. Church, West Greene Community Church, or to Perry Hi-Way Hose Company.
My sympathies to Gertie’s family. I am the niece of Dorothy Pregler Schwab. She ws married to Richard “Corky” Schwab. He was Gertrude’s brother.
