Leon “Shorty” Edwin Slayton, age 95, formerly of 17404 Center Road, Cussewago Township, Cambridge Springs, PA, died Monday, November 15, 2010 at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville, PA. He had been a resident there for the past eight years. Born in Avoca, New York on March 5, 1915, Leon was a son of the late Murry Slayton and Mae Johnson Slayton. He married Roxie Jane Pudder on November 6, 1936 and she preceded him in death on July 24, 2006.
During earlier years, Leon was a dairy farmer and was a logger for the Ed Davis Saw Mill. In 1964 he began work as a groundskeeper and doing work as a heavy equipment operator for Edinboro University, retiring in 1981. Leon was a member of the Carmel Baptist Church in Mosiertown and was a member of Rundell Grange for over 50 years. He was known for his strong work ethic and enjoyed gardening.
Preceding Leon in death in addition to his wife, was a son – James Slayton; a brother and a sister. Surviving family members include a son – Paul Slayton and his wife Carol of Meadville; two daughters – Jean Schwab of Meadville and Janet Darleen Andrews and her husband, Paul of Cambridge Springs; and a sister-in-law – Patricia Slayton of Cambridge Springs. In addition there are many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren surviving.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-8. Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. with Reverend Ron Sheldon, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church officiating. Interment will take place on Friday in Carmel Freeman Cemetery.
Jean – I am so sorry to read of your father’s passing in the online Tribune. As you know, I moved to Daytona Beach, FL in 10/2007; otherwise, I most certainly would be expressing my sympathies in person. Please know you’re in my thoughts and prayers.
