Alton Wendal Throop, Sr., age 85, resident of 22830 Willow Road, Cambridge Springs, PA, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville, PA. Alton was born son of the late Ernest Throop and Mae Terrill Throop, on November 6, 1925 in Cussewago Twp., Crawford County. Following his first marriage to the former Lydia Plavsity in 1950, he married Mary M. Greene on July 2, 1982 and she preceded him in death on February 6, 2007.

Throop, Alton Wendal Sr.During the Second World War, Alton served in the US Army with the 42nd Rainbow Division. Following his military service, Alton worked for the American Viscose in Meadville beginning in 1947 for five years and Erie Hammermill for three years. He worked for Parker White Metal in Erie as a metal grinder from 1955 until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Venango VFW # 169 and American Legion Post #381 in Cambridge Springs.

Family members surviving Alton include a son – Terry Throop and his wife, Sandy from Edinboro and their two children, Dylan and Alexis both at home; a daughter – Rita Reed and her husband, Charley of Meadville and their daughter, Robin; a step daughter – Cathy Gillespie and her husband, Jeff of Erie and their three children – Jared, Ryan, and Megan; and a brother – Floyd Throop and his wife, Sally of Meadville. He was preceded in death by a brother – Edgar Throop and a son – Alton W. Throop, Jr.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 and are invited to attend funeral services there Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. Reverend Robert Fuller, pastor of Littles Corners United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Venango Cemetery.
