Shirley D. Chase, age 72, formerly of Summit Township, died Monday, January 23, 2012 at her home in McKean. Born in Erie on March 9, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Leon Squires and Alma Raun Squires Dovichak.

Chase, Shirley D.Shirley graduated in 1958 from Edinboro Normal School and was married the following year on June 23, 1959 to her husband, Gaylord William Chase. Together they raised their family and lived most of their years in Summit Township until his death on July 5, 1996.

For over 15 years, Shirley worked for Wendy’s Restaurant, most of that time managing the Peach Street location. She was a longtime active member of Erie First Assembly of God where she participated in Bible studies and formerly taught Sunday School. She also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star.

Shirley loved her family and especially loved time spent with her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading and playing cards, and baking and cooking.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a sister, Janet Waldermarson.

Surviving family members include two sons, John Chase and wife Kelly of Union City, and James Chase and wife Lori of Waterford; five grandchildren, Haley, James Jr., and Timothy, and John Jacob and Misty; three sisters, Carol Grumblatt and husband Bill of Anaheim, CA, Ann Heald and husband Alan, and Kathy Michael and husband David, all of Edinboro; two brothers, David Squires and wife Diane of Edinboro, and James Squires and his friend Lisa Turner of Waterford; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will take place there on Friday morning at 11:00 am with Rev. Don Fisher of Erie First Assembly of God. Burial will follow at Waterford Cemetery.
