Robert “RC” Herman, age 78, passed away at his home in McKean on Saturday morning, March 3, 2012 after a long illness. Born in Erie on January 18, 1934, he is the son of Josephine Dahlkemper Herman of Erie and the late Archie Herman.
Mr. Herman graduated from Cathedral Prep in the “Crew of ’52”, and then joined the United States Marines and served until 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the McKean Lions Club where he was a past president, and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where he volunteered with the Angel Food Ministry and served on the maintenance committee.
Mr. Herman was most well known for his business, RC Herman and Sons Landscaping and Snow Removal, and for being a former Summit Township Supervisor. He also was a private contractor for National Fuel and Erie Water Works, and for 10 years a school bus driver for Fort LeBoeuf School District.
He enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting and traveling, and most of all, he was proud of his home in McKean which he cared for and maintained for 26 years.
In addition to his father, Archie Herman, he was preceded in death by a brother Richard Herman, and a niece Denise Miazynski.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Herman whom he married November 1, 1986; his mother, Josephine Herman; four sons: Jeffery Herman of Winston-Salem, NC, and Keith Herman, Christopher Herman, and Erik Herman and his wife Becky, all of Cape Coral, FL; an adopted son, James Herman of Alabama; a step-son, Blaine Duran and wife Karen of Waterford; three step-daughters: Robin Pruch and husband David of Bolivar, NY, Dawn Duran of Waterford and her fianc??? Mark DeWolf, and Darcie Duran of Waterford and her fianc??? Steve McClellan; and a daughter-in-law, Marcia Herman of Erie. He is further survived by two sisters: Ann Marie Torrelli of Girard and Janet Cole and her husband Roger of Erie; 17 grandchildren, 4 great-grandsons, 9 nieces and nephews, and his best friend, Arnold “Chub” Thompson.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in McKean on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am with Rev. Fr. Mark Nowak officiating.
