William Reid Smith, age 72, died unexpectedly at his home, 20327 Center Road, Venango, PA on Thursday afternoon, April 19, 2012. Born in Venango Township, Crawford County on April 8, 1940, Reid was a son of the late Charles Edwin Smith and Florence Mae Sherred Smith. He lived all of his life in Venango Township. He married the former Robin Marie Thomas on September 28, 1974 and she survives.

Smith, William ReidAfter receiving his education at Cambridge Springs High School, Reid worked at several places, each for several years. He was a farm worker for Kenny Kightlinger in Venango, was employed by the Concilla gas station in Venango, and worked for the PA Highway Department. His major employment was with the Carnation Can Company (Silgan) in Cambridge Springs where he worked for over 33 years. His final employment was for the Great Lakes Cabinet Company in Edinboro for four years. Additionally, beginning in 1971 and up until the present, Reid drove school bus for Brown & Smith Bus Lines and P M Bus Lines..

Over the years, Reid was actively engaged in several community activities. He was a former Venango Township supervisor for several terms, a former 4-H leader, was President of Gaited Horses Unlimited, and was active with the PA Equine Council. A skilled hobby of his was the shoeing of horses. As a team bus driver for Cambridge sports, he enjoyed following the various sport events. Reid was an active member of Saegertown United Methodist Church.

Surviving Reid is his loving wife of 37 years, the former Robin Thomas; his former wife – Jane Groger Smith; a son – John Smith of Venango and his friend – Nicole Hulbert of Cambridge Springs; a daughter – Bonnie Youngs and her husband, Mike of Meadville; two grandchildren – Andrew Youngs and Morgan Youngs. Also surviving are two sisters – Donna Smith and Elsie Anthony and her husband, Gene all of Venango; and two brothers – Ralph Smith and his wife, Alberta of Venango and Harry Smith and his wife, Pat of West Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Saturday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. and are invited to attend funeral services there Sunday afternoon at 2:00 with a calling hour before the funeral. Reverend Kenneth Custer, pastor of the Saegertown United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Venango Cemetery.
