David A. Smith, age 83, passed away peacefully at Edinboro Manor, Edinboro, PA on Sunday, July 22, 2012 after a short illness surrounded by his family. He had entered the Manor on Thursday and was a resident of Edinboro for the past 40 years.

Smith, David A.Born on October 11, 1928 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, David was a son of the late William Smith and Lydia Heilman Smith. On March 20, 1955, he married the former Shirley M. Koeppel and she survives.

Following his graduation from high school in Green Bay, Dave enlisted in the US Army and served in Japan. While there he was the personal transportation driver for General Douglas MacArthur. After his discharge in 1947, Dave became a self-employed business manager of several different enterprises. Throughout the years, he was a banker, a real estate agent, owned a car agency, and even dealt in horse trading. He was skilled at home repairs and was very enthusiastic about his Green Bay Packers Football Team and the General McLane Lancer Boys Basketball team. He was a loyal fan of theirs and seldom missed attending a game. David’s grandchildren meant so much to him and he loved to be in their presence at any occasion.

Dave leaves behind his faithful wife of 57 years – Shirley, who remains at home in Edinboro; his daughter – Lorri Schulz and her husband, Andy; a grandson – Brian Schulz and a granddaughter – Sarah Schulz all of Edinboro.

Friends will be received at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 306 Erie Street, Edinboro on Thursday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. No other services are being planned. Interment will be in Edinboro Cemetery.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the General McLane Boys Basketball program, c/o General McLane High School, 11761 Edinboro Road, Edinboro, PA 16412.
