Audrey Marcella Davis Marsh, age 95, resident of Waterford, passed peacefully from this life into the arms of her loving Lord on Friday, April 26, 2013. At the time of her passing, she was at home with her six loving daughters.
She was born June 4, 1917 in Wilkes Barre, PA, daughter of the late Charles Paulsgrove Davis and the late Agatha Mary Urban Davis King.
Audrey graduated with honors from Waterford Vocational School in 1934 when she was 16 years old. She worked as a nursemaid/housekeeper/cook for a prominent Erie family until her marriage to Gordon Sedgwick Marsh on August 30, 1937. They farmed at the Marsh homestead on Sedgwick Road in Waterford for 7 years, then moved to California for 2 years before returning to Waterford to open their own business, Marsh Sales and Service, which they operated until their retirement in 1982. For the next 10 years, they spent winters in Winnfield, LA.
Audrey was a longtime member of St. Cyprian’s Roman Catholic Church and Altar Society, the Pleasant View Garden Club, and was a charter member of the Birthday Dinner Club since 1937. She was also a member of the Waterford Grange. She enjoyed reading, knitting, traveling, musicals, flowers, birds, and sunsets. Family was the most important part of her life. She was a devoted wife and mother with never a tear, a complaint or bad word about anyone, and always had a smile for all.
Those in her family left to mourn her loss include her daughters: Faye (Ralph) Clark of Erie, Donna (Peter) Apostol of St. Johns, MI, Eileen (Walter) Horner of Erie, Cynthia (Robert) Salchak of Waterford, Pam Marsh of Waterford, and Kristie (Robert) Paterson of Binghamton, NY; also, her half-sister, Brenda Davis (Robert) Dolwick, and half-brother, Randy Davis.
She will also be remembered by her grandchildren: Kimberly Clark Raymond of Mays Landing, NJ, Melissa (Tom) Visosky of Erie, Amy (Jon) Swagart of Saranac, MI, Aaron (Christine) Apostol of St. Johns, MI, Julia (Michael) Hawkins of Erie, Walter (Hadley) Horner of Framingham, MA, Margaret Horner (Brian Morrison) of Baker, NV, Christian Malec of Shenzhen City, China, Aricka (Bruce) Ladebu of Conneaut Lake, Casimir Heynoski of Pittsburgh, Jordon Heynoski of Portland, OR, Carrick Heynoski (Nick Schroeck) of Fairview, Nicole Hanrahan of Binghamton, NY, and Robert (Ashley) Paterson of Centreville, VA. A special niece, Gaye Weigand of Cincinnati, OH, 20 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews will also miss her.
In addition to her parents, Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Sedgwick Marsh, her sister Rita Beringer, foster brother Richard Dudkiewicz, granddaughter Marcella Kathleen Horner, and great-granddaughter Audrey Rose Swagart.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. On Monday morning, a service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at All Saints Parish, 11264 Rt. 97, Waterford at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Father Thomas Whitman will officiate. Private burial will be in Waterford Cemetery at a later date.
