Tyrone J. “Ty” Smith, age 72, resident of Summit Township, died at his home on Tuesday evening December 3, 2013. Born in Erie on August 18, 1941, he was the son of the late George and Dorothy Smith.

Smith, Tyrone J. Ty served in the U.S. Navy from 1959-62 and worked at Erie Press Systems for almost 20 years. He then was employed at Skinner Engine for over 20 years until he retired in 2004. Ty was known as a motorhead and enjoyed anything to do with cars, especially attending car shows. He was skilled at working on engines and even raced snowmobiles. Before his retirement, Ty was an avid golfer playing often with his co-workers, and the last two winters he enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife, Darlene McGee Smith.

In addition to Darlene, he is survived by his son Troy Smith and wife Carol of Waterford; two grandchildren, Grant Smith and Heather Smith Rosthauser; his step-children, Cindy Clark and husband Scott of Spruce Pine, NC, Joyce Carr and friend Doug Mullinex, and Ralph Carr II and wife Jennifer, all of Waterford; six step-grandchildren, Brent, Michaela, Katie, Brady, Ashley, and Sarah; and his sister Beverly Hawes and husband Richard. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Judy.

Visiting hours and funeral services will take place on Saturday at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at which time the funeral service will begin.
