Robert J. Elder Jr., age 84, of Waterford, was born in Bradford, PA on December 4, 1929, and died at his daughter’s home in Waterford on Sunday, March 9, 2014. He was the son of the late Robert J. Elder Sr. and Sadie Mae Hess Elder, and the husband of the late Patricia Ann Guianen Elder, who died October 31, 1999.
Robert was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army. He worked at Marx Toys for several years, but was primarily a truck driver, driving for over 40 years for different employers including Paul Skelton, Cross Company and Russell Standard. Bob formerly belonged to the American Legion Post 285, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 740, and the Union City Moose Lodge. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and will be remembered for always being accompanied by his sidekick, his dog Trixie.
Other family members that preceded him in death include two sons, Bradley and Patrick Elder, a sister, Betty Hartman, and his son-in-law, James E. Rodgers Jr.
Bob is survived by three children– Deborah Rodgers of Waterford, Margaret Kertulis and husband Joe of Erie, and Tom Elder of Union City; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren– Lydia Guianen and her children Alexis, Bailey, and Tessa Bellis; Lisa Lafferty and her children Ashley and Danielle; Michelle Molina; Jessica Young and her children Remi, Rayne, and Luna; and Josh Elder. Also, his sisters and brothers– Barbara Desko of Girard, Sam Elder and wife Dorothy of Girard, Sue Hull of Waterford, and James Elder of Erie.
A private service for the family will take place at Waterford Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
