Nancy Lou Humes, age 79, resident of 20426 Meadville Road, Cambridge Springs, PA, passed away at Saint Vincent Health Center, Erie, PA on Friday, April 25, 2014 following a short illness. Born on July 17, 1934 in Geneva, Crawford County, PA, Nancy was a daughter of the late David Dempsey and Gladys Peterson Dempsey. She married Gayle Humes on September 22, 1954 and he survives.
Nancy graduated from Saegertown High School in 1953. She was a real estate agent from 1965 until 1975 representing the Bob Miller Real Estate Agency of Meadville. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse also and worked for a number of years at Wesbury United Methodist Community. Mostly, she was a home maker providing a good home for her husband and family whom she loved dearly. Nancy had a heart for ministering and caring for the needs of others, especially older folks. She was affiliated with Cambridge Springs First Baptist Church and was a member and Past Noble Grand of the previous Cambridge Springs Rebekah Lodge. Nancy was actively engaged with the Cambridge Springs Senior Citizens Center where she enjoyed being with her many friends and playing cards.
Surviving Nancy in addition to her husband, Gayle, are two children – Lewis Humes and his wife, Anita of Cambridge Springs and Terry Ohler and her husband, David of Madison, Ohio; seven grandchildren – Cathi Clark and her husband, Curtis of Saegertown; David Humes and his wife, Sarah of Cambridge Springs; James Humes and his wife, Lydia serving with the armed forces in Fort Stewart, GA; Ann Russell and her husband, Justin of Edinboro; Alexis Ohler of Madison, OH; Brandon Humes and Joshua Humes both of Cambridge Springs; several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews including Raymond Dempsey. In addition, a special close and dear friend – Ken Gerritsen of Meadville survives. Preceding Nancy in death were several brothers and sisters including a sister -Sally Groover.
Friends may visit at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Friday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 at the funeral home with Reverend Rod Beardsley, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge Springs, officiating. Interment will follow in Gravel Run Cemetery, Woodcock Township.
