Thomas Anthony Loewel, “Tom” 78, of Erie, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014, at the VA Medical Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Erie on February 19, 1936, a son of the late Margaret M. and Elmer J. Loewel.

Loewel, Thomas AnthonyHe attended Tech High School and served in the United States Marine Corp. He was employed by Erie Industrial Trucks, Codan Corp. and was an avid mechanic. He was a member of the VFW Post 470, and he loved football, hunting, fishing, NASCAR and was pitman at Daytona. Another passion was his lakeside cottage in North Springfield, PA. His summers were filled with family, friends, and get-togethers. He enjoyed horseshoes, the famous fish-fry?????s, and Happy Hour with the neighbors. “Never get excited,” was his favorite phrase, but he was often the first to do so.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his wife Darlene F. Loewel (McCormick), and brother Donald J. Loewel.

Survivors include his daughters: Lisa Ann Loewel and Lynn Marie Woodrow (Loewel; husband Mark); step-children: Richard N. Elkovitch (wife Natalie), Dodonna A. Burkell (Elkovitch) and his beloved son Joshua Thomas; his sisters: Marilyn A. Julio (Loewel) and Remle M. Metzger (Loewel); his grandchildren: Jacob, Colton, Heather, Dylan, Nicholas, Nathan, Nia, and Lexi; and several great grandchildren.

Funeral mass will be held Friday, December 12, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 West 26th Street in Erie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Erie VA Medical Center Hospice, 135 East 38th Street, Erie PA 16504.
