Harold C. Holmes, age 93, lifelong Waterford resident, passed away at his home on Monday, January 4, 2016 after a period of failing health. Harold was born in Erie on August 15, 1922 and grew up in Waterford, the son of Clyde and Nellie Hunter Holmes. During the 1940’s, he operated a successful dairy farm on Rt. 97 north of Waterford and was honored by receiving the American Farmer Degree in 1943. This was a highly coveted award with stringent requirements that was awarded to only seven Pennsylvania farmers. Harold received the award in Kansas City, MO.

Holmes, Harold young001Most of Harold’s working years were spent at Delavern and Holmes John Deere Equipment on main street in Waterford, then later Troyer Equipment, working there until 1973. Harold retired from Glenn Troyer Farms where he worked until he was into his 80’s.

Mr. Holmes was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Eureka Lodge No. 366, the Zem Zem Shriners, and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Waterford. He had a genuine concern for animals and particularly loved horses.

Harold married Joyce M. “Dodi” Smith Holmes on March 1, 1942, and she died on March 2, 2009. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Holmes, and two sisters, Marian Owens and Beth Rowland.

Holmes, Harold002Family members include two daughters- Karen “Bunny” McLallen and husband Robert of Phoenix, AZ, and Nancy Burawa and husband Joseph of Waterford; six grandchildren- Harold “Hody” McLallen (Phyllis), Amy Smith (Troy), Eric McLallen (Jenifer), Joseph “Jody” Burawa (Sue), Andrew Burawa (Kim), and Chad Burawa; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Holmes’ family will gather at the Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford for a private funeral service with the burial and committal service following at Waterford Cemetery. Chaplain Michael Kuvshinikov will officiate.
