William Arthur Nelson, 87, of Manchester Commons, formerly of Waterford, died January 6, 2016. He was born in Erie, December 7, 1928, youngest of Edwin and Esther Johnson Nelson’s eleven children.

Nelson, William?? Bill ran track and graduated East High in 1946. After attending Behrend College and graduating from GE’s apprentice program, he worked in manufacturing including Elgin Electronics and CG Wood. He married Clara “Lolly” Stevens in 1948; together they had six children.

In 1985, Bill suffered a severe accident and earned a second chance. He became a friend of Bill W and achieved 30+ years sobriety. Bill moved back to Waterford where he was active with his grandchildren, his church and AA.

He attended hundred of programs and athletic contests for his grands and his greats. He worked many years as sexton of his church and also served as Clerk of Session. He participated in the Thursday and Saturday night AA meetings. Every morning Bill enjoyed breakfast at Jake’s and every noon he could be found at the back corner table at Carini’s. He was a master tinkerer and builder, and loved crosswords and singing. He was a great tease and worked hard to get your goat, usually with a twinkle in his eye.

Bill is survived by his children: Kathy (Ray) Proctor, Jeff (JoAnn) Nelson, Cherie Nelson, Laura Breon, Dr. Kristine Nelson, Gary Nelson. Also by his grandchildren: Tim, Scott & Kelli, Jessica & Jonathan, Leigh & Tim, Sarah, Corrine & Buddy, Mallory & Kyle, and Cody; 6 great-grandchildren; sister Mercedes Nelson and brother Edwin (Rose) Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 9 brothers and sisters, and a grandson, Gregery Nelson.

A service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, W. 3rd & Walnut Streets, Waterford, at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 9th, followed by a social hour. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church or Greg Nelson Scholarship at the FLB Foundation, PO Box 810, Waterford.
