Eugene Constanty Szymkiewicz, 86, passed away at his home, 19578 Greytown Hills Road, Cambridge Springs, on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, following an extended illness. Born on October 06, 1929, in Natrona, PA, Gene was a son of the late Konstanti Szymkiewicz and Rose Kolasinski Szymkiewicz. On April 28, 1956, he married U. Eleanor Sperduti and she preceded him in death on June 4, 2011.

After graduating from Har-Brak High School, Natrona in 1947, Gene entered the Navy where he proudly served for 30 years, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer before retiring in 1977. After active naval duty, he was employed at PPG Industries, Meadville until his retirement in 1991. Gene was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Cambridge Springs and was a former president of the church council. He enjoyed attending the Cambridge Springs Senior Citizen Center. He also enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and had a wide variety of reading interests.

Preceding Gene in death, in addition to his parents and beloved wife, were his sisters – Regina Szymkiewicz and Mildred Bickle; a nephew – David Howard and niece – Katherine Marasia. Surviving family members include two sons – Edward Szymkiewicz and his wife, Barb of Meadville, and Steve Szymkiewicz and his wife, Maureen of Bethel Park; three daughters – Emilie Hall and her husband, Wallace of Sewickley; Susan Szymkiewicz of Cambridge Springs, and Mary Farkas and her husband, Matt of Tomball, Texas. Also surviving are eight grandchildren – Crystal Calouri, Danielle Hohmann, Stephanie Szymkiewicz, Nicole Szymkiewicz, Danielle Hall, Teresa Hall, Meg Farkas, and Matthew Farkas; six great grandchildren – Brynn Calouri, Reese Calouri, Vance Hohmann, Elias Hohmann, TJ Dinning, and Jensen Rose Hall; two sisters – Leona Howard and Sylvia Begolly; and one brother – Robert Szymkiewicz.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 335 Venango Avenue, Cambridge Springs, on Friday, May 7th from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Cambridge Springs at 10:30 AM. The Reverend David Poulson, pastor of the church, will be celebrant. Morning prayers will be held at the funeral home prior to the Mass beginning at 10 AM.

Interment will be in Cambridge Cemetery.
