Robert William Crowe, age 86, a Meadville native born to the late William L. “Smiley” Crowe and Rachel Nichois Crowe on October 7, 1929 passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016. He was married to the former Virginia M. Shartle on March 22, 1951 and she survives.

crowe-robert-2Bob graduated, much to his surprise, from Meadville High School in 1947. In 1951, he joined the cause in the Korean War serving four years as an ordinance man and consummate card player

upon the air craft carrier, US Orisknay, and was honorably discharged in 1954. In 1962, he went into business as an independent wholesaler for Good Pies Bakery which he maintained until 1974. Thereafter, he operated a franchise with Bluebird Bakery and a Bakery Thrift Store in Cambridge Springs until 1981. During those years he earned the fond nickname “Pie man” from friends of his son, Tom. In 1982, he gratefully followed his wife’s career from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA to Shippensburg University. He worked alternately at a grocery store and finished his career as he began it 40 years before as a mail carrier. He retired in 1994.

Bob was a community minded citizen. He was a 25 year member of the Venango Volunteer Fire Department serving in many capacities, including chief. He was a founding member of the Cambridge Area Volunteer Ambulance Service and for a time was active as an ambulance driver. He also was a founding member and president of the Cambridge Springs Booster Club. He could be seen walking the down marker at the Cambridge Springs High School football games for over twenty years. He was a football fan, but moreover a fan of kids. He was a member and past master of Covenant Masonic Lodge #473 of Cambridge Springs and a charter member of Venango VFW Post #169.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Dr. Virginia M. Crowe, he is survived his three sons – Tom of Saratoga, WY; David and his wife, Mary Ann, of Fairview Township, PA; and Steven and his wife, Judy, of Hallam, PA. Also surviving are six grandchildren – Katie, Luke, Jake, Amanda, Sharlyn, and Michael and twelve great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his loving older sister – Virginia Zimmer; his sister – Carolyn Triplett; and beloved baby sister – Judy Bond; and a grandson – Christopher.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Monday, September 19th from 2-4 and 6-8. Funeral services will be held there on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Lucas Crowe. Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery, Meadville.
