Mary Isabelle Shields McLallen Wellman, age 87, loving mother and grandmother, was carried through the Heavenly Gates on September 5, 2016 at Wesbury United Methodist Community in Meadville. Born on May 12, 1929 in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, Mary was a daughter of the late Albert J. Shields Jr. and Blanch Sawyer Shields. Her first marriage was to Luther McLallen and subsequently she married Ron Lynn Wellman on March 31, 1977 who died on October 12, 2012.

Mary graduated from Waterford Academy in 1949 and wore many hats during her younger working years. Together she and her first husband, Luther McLallen, owned and operated a dairy farm in the Edinboro area where she was a devoted farmer’s wife. In addition, Mary worked for a number of years at General McLane School cafeteria, was a custodian for two churches, and a wonderful caregiver for many people whom she became closely attached. She also worked for Penn Union in Edinboro as a punch press operator from where she retired after a number of years. For most of her life Mary was a member of Washington Valley Christian Church and the Ladies Aide, but in later years she became a member of Lyona Bible Church closer to her home in Meadville. She had many hobbies in her life and enjoyed singing, dancing, shopping, and serving lunches at the Washington Valley Church to her special friends and area farmers. She also liked going out and traveling.

Surviving Mary are three children – Susan Kahlbaugh and her husband, William of Albion; David McLallen and his wife, Lisa of Erie; and Janet McLallen of Townville; four grandchildren – Hallie Utley (Jim); Ian McLallen and his fianc?e, Christine; Christine Colford (Dale); and Patrick McLallen; and two great grandchildren – Leiah and Liam McCarls. Also surviving are two brothers – Albert Shields (Marilyn) and Dell Shields (Bobbie), and two sisters – Lura Silvaggi and Clara Mae Hall; and by a special person included among her many friends – Anne Rhoden. Mary was preceded in death in addition to her husbands – Luther McLallen and Ron Wellman and her parents, by a brother – Frank David Shields.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 306 Erie Street, Edinboro on Thursday, September 8th from 2-4 and 6-8 and are invited to attend funeral services there on Friday at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Ron Kennedy, pastor of Draketown Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
