Dorothy H. (Kurtz) Johnson, age 91, of Waterford, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017 after a short illness. Born in Erie, PA on September 28, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ida Delmoe Kurtz.
Dot was a full-time homemaker who loved to camp and fish with her husband, and traveled to Montana every year to visit with her mother’s family. She always had grandchildren around and often took a few with them when they traveled. Her great-grandchildren affectionately called her “Grandma Candy” because she always had candy for them.
Those preceding her in death included her husband of 63 years, Elmer (Red) Johnson; four brothers, Henry, Frank, Samuel, and George Kurtz; two sisters, Ellen Fink and Ida Mae King; and her grandson, Anthony Henning.
Dot is survived by a brother, Alfred (Annabell) Kurtz of Elizabethtown, NY; two sons, Dennis (Shirley) Johnson of Waterford and Richard Johnson of East Springfield; three daughters, Carolyn Marzka of Waterford, Betty (Harry) Holmwood of McKean, and Cynthia (John) Burns of Waterford. She also has 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a foster daughter, Liela Sevcik of St. Petersburg, FL and a brother-in-law, William Johnson of McKean.
Friends are invited to call at Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and may attend funeral services there on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Barbara English of the McKean United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Valley Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or any charity of choice.
