Grace Alberta Alward, age 90, passed away of natural causes on June 29, 2018. She was born on January 30, 1928, the daughter of Holbert Davis and Agnes Freeman Davis. Grace worked in Erie as a Rosie the Riveter after high school. She married Herbert Alward on June 7, 1945, and they made their home on a dairy farm on Moisertown Road outside of Cussewago. Grace worked in the cafeteria at the Cussewago School as she raised her family. After her husband, Herbert, retired, they traveled all over the country visiting family and seeing the sites until he passed away in 1994. Grace then kept busy helping her daughter cater and later helping her operate Smith’s Country Gardens where she was known as Grandma by one and all.
Grace was a warm and loving person who took great joy in her children and grandchildren. She had a smile for everyone she met and a zest for life. She enjoyed watching scary movies and reading Stephanie Plum Novels. She was a real card shark and played a mean game of skipbo. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Alward; a granddaughter, Marianne Alward Mason; and two brothers: Luther Davis and Jack Davis.
Survivors include her son, Frank Alward and his wife, Janice of Conneautville; her son, Ronald Alward and his wife, Linda of Cambridge Springs; her son, Chester Alward and his wife, Sherry of Crossingville; her daughter, Nancy Alward, and her husband, Charles of Guys Mills; her son, Roy Alward and his wife, Eileen of Saegertown; her daughter, Sandie Swart and her husband, Ralph of Corry; twenty one grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Roena Alward Hough; and her brother-in-law, Howard Peters.
Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Sunday, July 1, from noon until 3 p.m., at which time a funeral service will begin with the Reverend Rod Beardsley officiating. Interment will be at Venango Cemetery.
