Elbert ?E.B.? Barton Friend, age 91, of Edinboro passed away peacefully on June 24, 2018, at Edinboro Manor. Eb was born on August 28, 1926, in Sang Run, MD, the son of Owen and Hazel Savage Friend. He grew up in Cambridge Springs and graduated from Cambridge Springs High School. He served in the United States Army stateside during World War II. ?He ?graduated from Alliance College in 1950, and married his Friend, Elbert029 (2)wife, Helen L. Hillard, on June 3, 1950. Elbert received a masters degree from Syracuse University and as a lifelong learner, went on to study further at the University of New Mexico, the University of Colorado, and Brown University. After teaching science at Linesville High School, he accepted a position in the Biology Department at Edinboro State College in 1966. Eb taught Physiology and was a faculty advisor to the scuba club. ?Retiring in 1988, he enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States and abroad with his wife, Helen.

Mr. Friend was a member of the Cambridge Springs United Methodist Church, and he and his wife gave generously to missions and many humanitarian causes. Eb had an outstanding singing voice throughout his entire life and enjoyed singing in the church choir.? He was an active member of the Cambridge Springs Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen H. Friend on July 29, 2007.

Survivors include his daughter, Carole Werder and her husband, Robert of Edinboro; his son, David Friend and his wife, Louise of Gettysburg, PA; three grandchildren: granddaughter, Suzanne Werder; granddaughter, Celeste Ordiway and her husband, Jeremiah; and grandson, Joseph Werder, and his wife, Stacy; three great-grandchildren: Gabriel and Windsor Ordiway and Scarlet Werder.

Elbert?s family wishes to thank the excellent staff at Edinboro Manor for providing a loving community that he thrived in for the last 2-1/2 years of life. The skilled and compassionate care made his final years a joy despite of his declining health.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Wednesday, June 27, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday, June 28, from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. and are invited to a funeral service to be held there on Thursday, June 28 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Joe Samalenge officiating. Interment will be at Volant Cemetery.
