Carrie Darlene Szermeta, age 61, of Cambridge Springs passed away at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Erie, on Friday July 6, 2018 after a courageous fight with ovarian cancer. She was born in Meadville on June 20 ,1957, a daughter of Billy and Donna Mae Davenport Spencer. Carrie graduated from Maplewood High School with the class of 1975. She entered the US Army in 1978, completed her degree in medical technology, and served as a medical technician until 1988. She met her future husband John Szermeta while stationed in South Korea. In 2011, Carrie earned an additional degree in music. She had a thirty year career as a medical technician with Meadville Medical Center until her retirement in 2018. Carrie was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Drake’s Mills and served as pianist and choir director. She also was a member of the Concert Band of Northwest PA , the Shades of Time swing band and had been a member of the Erie Thunderbirds. Carrie belonged to American Legion Post 205, Saegertown. She enjoyed participating in the Allegheny College band camps for adult musicians, hunting, fishing and caring for her cats.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ronnie and daughter, Kim. Survivors include her parents – Billy and Donna Spencer of Cambridge Springs, daughter- Tracey Szermeta of Cambridge Springs, a sister-Tammy Peters (Steve) of Cambridge Springs, a brother – John Spencer of Meadville. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a special friend, Anne Robillard.
Friends may call at Van Matre Funeral Home on Sunday July 8, from 5 until 8 pm and at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Drakes Mills on Monday July 9 from 11:00 until 12:30. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm with Rev. Brian Riddle officiating. Interment will be at New Richmond Cemetery.
