Fred U. Smith passed away on February 28, 2023 at home surrounded by family. He was born October 21, 1936 in Moscow, Pennsylvania and was the son of Wilbur Smith and Verna Davey Smith. He grew up in Montoursville, Pa. with his sister Faye, and his nephews, a niece. He made many dear friends.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Katharine Mangum Smith, his son Matthew William Smith of Chuckey, Tennessee, and his daughter Julie Frances Smith of Edinboro, Pa. He is also survived by his granddaughters Ashley Nicole Smith and Piper Defilippis, and his great-granddaughters Amelia May Harbaugh and Alivia Rose Harbaugh.

Fred was a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Health and Physical Education. He then went to D.T. Watson School (University of Pittsburgh) for his degree in physical therapy. He started out as assistant chief at St. Vincent Rehabilitation Center, also working evenings as a physical therapist at Millcreek Community Hospital. He then started Erie Physical Therapy Associates and later North Penn Therapeutics, a certified rehab agency. Fred provided physical therapy services for many institutions over many years. He was so proud of the therapists that worked with him and liked to brag that he had the best staff.

After retiring, Fred became a farmer, growing vegetables and preserving them himself. As a Penn State grad, he loved attending the football games at Beaver Stadium for over 25 years. Fred and his daughter Julie were always cheering the loudest. He also had a strong love for his many dogs, both German Short Hair Pointers and his beloved Humane Society pals.

Services were provided by Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford.
