It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard J. Bernhardt, age 74, of Albion. Richard was born on August 17, 1948 and passed away on May 21, 2023. He was the youngest child of the late Fred and Margaret Bernhardt. He attended General McLane High School, and from there, he joined the United States Air Force. Throughout his career, he wore many hats – among them, zookeeper at the Erie Zoo, nurse’s aid at Pleasant Ridge Manor, cook, and restaurateur.

Richard always had a great love for animals. He owned a small farm, and loved being surrounded by his goats. He served at the Albion Fair for many years in the goat barn and was a committed member of the community.
Not only did he have a love for animals, his second love was for his family. Richard is survived by his wife of 22 years Nancy Bernhardt, his children, Steven (Sue), Michael (Bonnie), Adam (Miranda), Jessica (Andrew) Caldwell, Rachel (Jesse) Carnes, and his stepson Daniel (Yvonne) Osterberg. He is further survived by his brother David (Bonnie) and sister Judith Kloss. He has 22 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at the Albion Nazarene Church in Albion, PA on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 3pm.
