Hubert Smith, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Summit Township on Monday, June 5th, 2023 with his wife of 75 years, Louise, by his side.

Hubert spent much of his life and livelihood at the Smith Family Farm, also known as Smith’s Dairy, in Summit Township. He was born in 1929 in Erie and graduated from Academy High School in 1947.

He worked with his father and family on the farm before becoming responsible for the future of the tri-county cow population (250k first services). Hubert spent decades working for ABC- Atlantic Breeders Cooperative and seemed to know or was known by everyone. As Hubert joked with his friends, and grandsons, he had more “relations” in Erie County than any other farmer.

As he gracefully aged, he never lost his (slightly) twisted sense of humor, often sharing quips about his cow breeding, even going so far to name his fishing boat “Miss-Conception”. Those who laughed with him will never forget his high-pitched giggle, and often could not help but join him in laughter. “You’re one and a million!” was a common phrase Hubert would tell anyone he met.

Hubert had many hobbies outside of work with his friends. Bowling was a passion. Whether with his wife Louise, or with friends and family members, Hubert enjoyed local bowling leagues for over 40 years. He also played in a couple’s card club with eight other couples for 50+ years. Any additional time was spent hunting – whether on his own property or trips out West with his family and friends.

Throughout the years, as his family grew, he enjoyed the many activities of his children, followed by grandchildren (20), then great grandchildren (29). Whether at a high school wrestling match, baseball/softball field, on a cross country course or running track, volleyball court, gymnastics meet, or hocky rink, he could be found cheering on his family members and cutting their statistics out of the paper.

There aren’t many in the Waterford/Summit area who didn’t know Hubert, or his still surviving wife, Louise. So many have connections to his family, the Smith family pond, and the farm and property.
Hubert was preceded in death by his son David, and his grandson Robbie.

He leaves behind his wife, Louise Arvilla Smith; children, Paula (Sam Bayle), Rod (Darlene), Darren, Karen (Dave Heard), and Brian (Jenny); grandchildren Charlie, Nicki, Kim, and Jesse (Paula), RJ, Rosie, Randy, Rachel, and Rylie (Rod), Darren Jr., Sari, Gunnar (Darren), Krissy, Andy, Matt (Karen), Emma, Abby, Lydia, and Kevin (Brian). The majority of his 29 great-grandchildren were fortunate enough to spend time with Hubert at his home – sometimes fishing, sometimes just chatting, often telling stories about his past.

Visiting hours will be at Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford on Sunday from 2-6 pm. The funeral service will be held there Monday at 10:00 am followed by committal service and burial at Waterford Cemetery.
