Donald E. Bidwell, age 87, of Waterford, passed away on Monday, May 3, 2021, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Cambridge Springs on April 20, 1934, a son of the late Robert F. and Velma (Swift) Bidwell. On May 31, 1958, Don married Mary Louise (Mary Lou) Bulik; she preceded him in death on October 27, 2008. They lived in Millers Station, near Cambridge Springs, for many years before moving to Waterford in 1983.
Don attended school at Randolph High School and was a 1952 graduate of Cambridge Springs High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 for two years and was stationed in Alaska. Don has been a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #12 for the past 50+ years, and worked in the sheet metal trade for several local companies in northwest PA, including Cambridge Springs and Erie locations.
As a member of All Saints Parish in Waterford, Don enjoyed being involved in activities in the life of the church. In addition to family, Don’s interests included attending high school sporting events, antique shows or swap meets, local dirt-track car racing, polka music, mowing his yard with his John Deere, watering his flowers, and camping in his earlier years. Don, along with his wife, Mary Lou, were also members of the Griswold and Cast-Iron Association and were strong supporters of the community. Nothing meant more to them than friends, neighbors, and family.
Don is survived by two sons, Carter Bidwell and his wife Jeanine of Orange, TX, and Larry Bidwell of Waterford; two daughters, Janet Wilcox and her husband Stuart of Saegertown, and Jennifer Frank and her husband Michael, also of Waterford; ten grandchildren: Angela Lopez (Victor Bacilo), Marc Frank, Matthew Frank (wife Rachel), Dawn Bidwell Brown (husband Mark), Nathan Wilcox, Brent Bidwell, Stefanie Lindberg (husband Brock), Natalie Wilcox, Lisa Alexander (husband Danny), and Ryan Wilcox; twelve great grand-children: Alexia and Angel Lopez, Shelby Frank, Nora and Everett Frank, Chloe and Chase Brown, Abagale and Dalton Lindberg, Payton, Zachary and Lillian Alexander; a sister Joanne Amy (husband Robert) of Saegertown, a brother Richard Bidwell (wife Christine) of Blooming Valley, an aunt Helen Bidwell of Union City, and several nieces and nephews. Don will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
In addition to his parents and his wife of 50 years, Don was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Bidwell, two brothers, George and Robert Bidwell, a daughter, Karen Bidwell Kowle, and granddaughter, Shelby Wilcox.
Friends and family may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at All Saints Parish at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Gregory Passauer will officiate. Interment will follow at Venango Cemetery.
