Mary Melnick, age 95, of Waterford, went to heaven on Saturday, May 29, 2021. She was born in Erie on December 28, 1925, a daughter of the late Rhea and Neil Sherman.
Mary was a 1944 graduate of Bloomfield High School in Lincolnville, PA. She loved to cook which was evident in the huge picnics she hosted, and she was well-known for her pies and cabbage rolls. Mary was an avid gardener, and she loved canning and traveling. When she was just 16 years old, she went to work at a restaurant in Wesleyville, and worked at Zink’s Dry Cleaning Plant. Also, she worked at Jacob Haller’s Wholesale Grocers as a secretary, Stromberg Carlson Radio Shop, Erie Resister, Corry Plastics, and later at Penn-Union.
Mary met her husband Michael in 1945 after he came home from the U.S. Navy. They married in 1947 and bought a farm where they raised eight children.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Michael Melnick; two sons-in-law, one great-grandson, four brothers and one sister.
Her only surviving sibling is Betty Chapman of Union City; and she is further survived by eight children– Michele Smiley (Bruce Brown) of Union City, Marshall (wife Tonya) of Waterford, Bonnie Slayton of Riverton, WY, Jeff (wife Janice) of Cambridge Springs, Jerol (Althea) of Townville, Blaine (wife Linda) of Waterford, Mary Sceiford (husband Steven) of Waterford, and Joseph (wife Vicky) of Waterford; also, 22 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
Friends may call at Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and are invited to services there on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Terry Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Waterford Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
