Gary Lee Shelhamer passed from this earth on November 2, 2021 at the beautiful age of 84 from complications of dementia/Alzheimer’s. He was the son of the late James Ward Shelhamer and Ruth Bisbee Shelhamer, born in Erie on September 15, 1937 and raised in the Edinboro, Cambridge Springs and Venango area. He graduated from Edinboro High School in the class of 1956.
Gary worked for Agway at the feed mill in Edinboro and then transferred to the Petroleum division and worked in their service department until 1989 when he started his own business, “Shelhamer Heating and Air Conditioning”. His business kept him busy in the Southern Erie County and Northern Crawford County area for many years. He was active in the Edinboro Lions Club and the Masonic Hall in Edinboro for several years.
Gary joined the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department in June 1956, and served as President, Chief, Assistant Chief; was on the Building and Grounds committee, helping to build the current fire station; and was a member of the original EVFD Gun Raffle Committee serving for 20 years. He also was a member of the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department, serving as their Fire Chief and various other positions for several years.
In later years, Gary had a 9 acre mini-farm that kept him busy mowing, hunting, and gardening. During his spare time, he enjoyed camping and cooking French onion soup and other delectable meals for his camp friends and family.
Besides his parents, Gary was preceded in death by a sister, Martha (Billie) Collins; a step-daughter, Heather (Suhy) Bentley, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margie and Jesse Koon.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, June T. (Suhy) Shelhamer of Edinboro; son, David L. Shelhamer (Karen), granddaughter, Morgan Shelhamer of Edinboro; a step-daughter, Michelle Overmeyer (Michael), step-grandsons, Aaron Wagner of Edinboro and Samuel Wagner, serving in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, VA; and step-son-in-law Alex Bentley (Wendy), step-granddaughter Alyssa Bentley of Edinboro. He is also survived by his sister, Retha Kibler of Lake City, PA; his brother, Larry Shelhamer of Edinboro; a sister-in-law Sharon Lawrence (Randy) of Edinboro; his first wife, Lois Shelhamer of Edinboro; a nephew, Earl J. Koon (Teresa) of Edinboro; and several extended nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Sunday, November 7, 2021 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Van Matre Funeral Home, 306 Erie Street, Edinboro. Friends may also call there on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until time of the 11:00 a.m. funeral service conducted by Pastor Lisa Grant of the Edinboro United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Mitchell Cemetery, Cambridge Springs, PA.
