Susie E. (Heiter) Cole, 1939-2024 – On March 19, 2024, Susie Cole, age 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by those that loved her. Susie spent her life in the Mill Village area and she lived a life full of fun and adventure. She was born in Erie on December 12, 1939, a daughter of the late William F. and Mildred A. (Brown) Heiter Sr.

Susie graduated from Harborceek High School in 1957, and met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Cole in 1971. Her loving husband, Richard, preceded her in death in 2022. She worked a number of jobs, but she and Dick opened Cole’s Family Restaurant in 1984, and it was a staple in the community until they transferred ownership in 1998. After Susie and Dick sold their restaurant, she started working at Jake’s on the Park in Waterford until she was in her 80s.

Susie was always quick with a joke, but she meant no harm (most of the time). Her strong work ethic and wit was inherited by Susie’s five daughters: Kimberly, Patricia, Paula, Brenda, and April. In addition to her girls, Susie also had 4 step-children: Danny, Patty, Susanna, and Jackie.

Susie expressed love through her cooking; she made homemade sticky buns every Christmas morning for her family, and they often begged for her chicken and dumplings. She never told any of them “no” when it was requested.

When Susie wasn’t at Jake’s or with her family, you could find her at the American Legion Post 237 with her husband, Dick–always armed with a good quip and a laugh.

Susie loved cooking, Elvis, and her family.

She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Leemhuis (John), Patricia Cole, Paula Cousins (James), Brenda Donahue (Zeb), and April Cole; her step-children, Danny Cole (Tara), Patty Cornette (Patrick), and Susanna Welchance; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Heiter Rodgers; her father William Heiter Sr.; her stepdaughter, Jackie Smallwood; her brothers, Ray Anderson, Clay Anderson, and William Heiter Jr.; her sisters, Cora Brown, Hannah Peck, Helen Lanagan, Wilma Mills, Beatrice Peters, and Georgetta Bartlett.

Friends may call at Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford on Saturday from 5-8 pm, and Sunday from 1-2 with funeral services immediately following. Melvin Cole, Elder of the Presbyterian Church of Corry and nephew of Susie, will officiate. Burial will follow at LeBoeuf Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Paula S. Cousins Ovarian and Endometrial Cancer Foundation Inc., or Paula’s Promise at P O Box 928, Waterford, PA 6441.
