Paulene Reese Shields Houghton, of Edinboro, died at the age of 93 on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 after a brief illness. She was born May 6, 1930 in Silver City, NM to Norman Reese and Glea Watson Reese. She was the oldest of five children.

Paulene grew up in several small towns in New Mexico. After high school, she worked as an operator at the telephone company where she met her first husband, Clare “Corky” Shields of Edinboro, PA. With their oldest daughter Judy, they moved to Edinboro around 1958 where they had a milk route and later purchased the Wayside Inn several years after their second child was born. Together they operated the Inn for about 7 years and Clare died in 1977.

In the 1980’s, Paulene met and married her second husband, Bob Houghton. They traveled extensively around the United States, and she enjoyed gardening, playing golf, and bowling. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Paulene was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, two brothers- Clyde and Jerry Reese, one sister- Donna Bartmess, a step-son- Robert Shields, and an infant son.

Her family members include two daughters, Judy (John) Stegan of Altus, OK, and Cora (Joe) Bartosek of Edinboro; three granddaughters, Shawna (Jonathan) Johnson of Carter, OK, Robin Bartosek and Kim (Josh) Uhlig of Edinboro; a grandson, Jeremy (Lauren) Bartosek of Muncy, PA; five step-children, Gay (Joe) Marrs of Krum, TX, Guy Shields of Princeton, TX, Robin (Shawn) Beal of Merrit Island, FL, Jessica (Ronnie) Helms of Rawlett, TX, and Jody Miller of Florida. She is further survived by her brother, James Reese; four other step-children, Mike (Brenda) Houghton of Erie, Jim Houghton of McKean, Sue Ekeland of Edinboro, and Chris (Tom) Kitson of McKean; her great-grandchildren, Michael, O’Ryan, Sierra, Stella, and Wrenley; numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her favorite “Man”, Mr. Stitch.

Friends and family are invited to calling hours at Van Matre Funeral Home in Edinboro on Monday, January 22nd from 4-7 pm, and to the funeral service there on Tuesday at 10:00 am. Committal service and burial will follow at Edinboro Cemetery.

    Dear Cora & family,I’m so sorry to read this,Pauline was such a Special person,,I always I Loved getting to visit with her when she’d come into the shop to get her hair fone!!!
