Flora Mae Hovis, age 97, lifelong resident of Waterford, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at UPMC Hamot. She was born in LeBoeuf Township on April 15, 1928 to Lewis and Shirley McLallen McGahen. Flora married Lloyd S. “Nink” Hovis on June 20, 1949, and he preceded her in death on February 19, 2011.
A longtime member of the Waterford First Presbyterian Church, Flora served there as an elder and Women’s Association president, was Person of the Year in 1997 which she shared with Mary Kuhn and Gladys Bliley, and she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a life member of the Shiloh Chapter #153 of Order of Eastern Star and she enjoyed gardening. Flora graduated from Waterford High School in 1946 and worked at the Gem Restaurant and the Sugar Bowl in Waterford. She volunteered at the Well Baby Clinic and was a polio survivor of 83 years.
In addition to her husband Lloyd, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Marjorie Rhea, Elizabeth Pontious, and Barbara Heard; a brother, Edward McGahen; two daughters, Cynthia Lou and Brenda Lee.
Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Cross, and Linda Hull and her husband Milo; four grandchildren, Jeri Cross and Dan Cross, Brent Hull and Eric Hull.
Friends may call at Van Matre Funeral Home in Waterford on Sunday, March 1st from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7 pm.
