Peterson, Richard Eugene July 29, 1939 - May 23, 2024

Date of Funeral

May 28, 2024

Richard Eugene Peterson, age 84, of Cambridge Springs passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at St. Vincent Health Center. Richard was born on the family homestead in Rome Township on July 29, 1939, son of the late Raymond E. Peterson and Helen Cornell Peterson.  He was reared by his father and stepmother Eleanor J. Petersen Peterson. On September 5, 1964, he married the love of his life, Sandra Sue Warner, and they enjoyed over 45 years of marriage until her passing on October 8, 2009. For over twelve years Dick worked at Urick Foundry and for over fifteen years at the EMI Foundry both of Erie and had also been employed with Hazlett Tree Service, Troyer Farms and along with Reed Gage at the Gage dairy farm. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge Springs and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

It was evident looking at Dick’s hands that he was a hard worker.  His hands told his story. He would do what it took to provide for his family—which was what defined him. Family was everything. Dick was cutting wood, days prior to his passing, so he could heat the family homestead. When his body could no longer endure hard labor, he was fond of observing others working. He could be found at his daughter’s place of employment, sitting in an easy chair, taking in everything going on and offering a few suggestions here and there. He was also known to get in his truck to drive to a construction site. He appreciated the process—beginning to end. He cherished going to his close friends’ sawmill to oversee activities and of equal importance to share camaraderie. His work ethic ran deep.

Dick was an unassuming man with a generous heart and a modest smile. Next to his family and work, he loved children. He freely shared his sweet treats with many neighborhood youngsters. He relished seeing them happy and smiling. Dick exemplified a simple life, well lived.

In addition to his wife Sandy, he was also preceded in death by his son, Richard Craig Peterson in 2010; brothers, David, Raymond, and Jim Peterson; and sister Barb Harroun.

Survivors include his daughter, Charity Sue Peterson of Cambridge Springs, and his son, Mark Eugene Peterson of Cambridge Springs.

All are invited to call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, Cambridge Springs on Tuesday, May 28, from 10-12 noon at which time the funeral service will be held with the Rev. Rod Beardsley officiating. Interment will follow at Mitchell Cemetery.

    The Skurka Family says

Charity and Mark, you both know how much our family thought of your dad. He was a very special man who was always there in our lives. I’m so glad we have so many memories of him at our house and the shop. I’ve never known such a busy and hard working guy. He didn’t know the meaning of the words slow down. We all will miss him dearly, but I know he’s with your mom and brother. One day we’ll all be reunited again. Until then, carry on in life like you know he’d want and know that we all are here for you both like always and forever. (((HUGS)))
