Another golden heart stopped beating on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, when Carl R. Zimmer, 79, of Edinboro, passed away at his residence. Carl was born in Erie on November 27, 1946, the son of the late Robert James Zimmer and Rose L. Kline Zimmer. He graduated from General McLane High School with the Class of 1964 and proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard. On September 9, 1967, he married the former Susie Illig. He was employed by Penn Union for a short time before beginning a 39½-year career with Warren Company in Erie, where he worked for Bumps, Carol, and Bob Warren. Carl enjoyed spending time on his tractor, caring for his African gray parrots, Lilly and Calypso, and, most of all, treasured the time he spent with his children. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alfred and Charlotte Illig; his sister, Joyce Hurta; his brother-in-law, Chico Hurta; his sister-in-law, Patricia Illig Stafford and her husband, Edwin Stafford; and his brothers-in-law, Elmer Zilhaver and Butch Illig.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susie Illig Zimmer of Edinboro; his son, Jason Zimmer of Edinboro; his son, Matthew Zimmer (Jennifer Sliker) of Edinboro; his brother, Dave Zimmer (Sandy) of Edinboro; his sisters-in-law, Carol Zilhaver and Nancy Illig; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Van Matre Funeral Home, Cambridge Springs on Friday, July 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held there on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., with the Rev. Jeffery St. Clair officiating. Committal and interment will follow at Miller Station Cemetery.
